In a vibrant setting within the RPAC, a group of 30 students practice martial arts while wielding weighted wooden swords. Led by Aaron Gall, the center's head martial arts instructor, this innovative course, titled "The Way of the Saber," merges elements of traditional martial arts, such as Kendo and European swordsmanship, into a dynamic fitness experience influenced by film classics like “Star Wars.”

Gall emphasizes personal expression in his classes: “I want students to think creatively and ask themselves, ‘How would you approach this?’” Given the enthusiastic response, it’s no surprise that the class fills up almost immediately upon registration.

Ohio State’s Sport, Fitness and Health Program (SFHP) proudly boasts over 50 courses during the academic year. Popular offerings include Yoga 1 and social dance classes, which introduce students to the joys of rhythm and movement. A newly anticipated course, “Sit Better, Move More,” aims to enhance students' overall comfort and mobility.

Jae Westfall, program director at SFHP, underlines the importance of student engagement: “Students are our priority, and we strive to deliver a positive experience.” With nearly three decades of commitment to fitness at Ohio State, Westfall can attest to the profound impact of these classes.

Whether students seek social connections or personal growth, the SFHP programs cater to all. In particular, Social Dance 1 and 2 offer an exciting opportunity to master various dance styles, including Tango and Waltz. For many students, social dance provides more than just physical activity; it serves as a medium for forming lasting relationships. As senior lecturer Tamara Rankin shares, “I’ve seen students meet and even get married from these classes, forming lifelong bonds through shared experiences.”

Launching in Autumn 2026, “Sit Better, Move More,” led by instructor Beaker Prince, is designed to promote mobility and awareness of posture. The course intends to inspire students to appreciate movement and explore how to incorporate it into daily life more joyfully. Additionally, Prince teaches Yoga 1, which has been part of the program for years, focusing on the holistic connection between body, mind, and breath.

“We emphasize understanding the principles behind the poses and developing self-compassion,” says Prince, highlighting the broader benefits that yoga offers, including improved mental well-being.

In "The Way of the Saber," not only do students build physical skills, but they also foster a close-knit community. Gall points out, “The core tenets emphasize respect and knowledge-sharing among students, which helps create a strong sense of belonging.” The positive relationships that form in these classes are a testament to the supportive environment at Ohio State.

“Building relationships with students is my favorite aspect of teaching,” Gall concludes. “My students are what drive me.”
