Hyundai Motor Group is pursuing dual objectives in autonomous driving: rapid commercialization and technology independence. The group has launched its Data Flywheel platform, targeting production of Nvidia-powered Level 2+ vehicles by mid-2028 and Level 2++ models by late 2028. Its proprietary Atria AI system aims for Level 2++ vehicles by the second half of 2029.
The Data Flywheel operates through a closed loop, leveraging vehicle data for AI model training and improvements, benefiting from Hyundai and Kia’s combined sales of over seven million vehicles annually across 190 countries.
Key features of the framework include hard example mining, virtual validation, and the Data Union — a shared data architecture among Hyundai, Kia, Motional, and 42dot. Additionally, a “Follow-the-Sun” approach enables continuous model development across South Korea and the U.S.
42dot is developing a vision-language-action (VLA) model that integrates language reasoning into autonomous decision-making, with validation in simulation set to be followed by on-road testing by early 2027. A Level 4 pilot using Atria AI will be conducted in Gwangju, South Korea, by late 2026, feeding real-world traffic data back into the Data Flywheel for enhanced model performance.
