Climate justice receives support from ELCA synods.

This article highlights the significant support for the World Council of Churches’ Ecumenical Decade of Climate Justice Action, with sixteen synods from the ELCA endorsing the initiative. This amounts to approximately 25% of the ELCA’s total 65 synods. The movement, which started in 2025 and will continue until 2034, emphasizes the urgent need for climatic stewardship and systemic change, aiming to unite congregations in action and advocacy.

Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary’s Center for Climate Justice and Faith is actively encouraging more synods to adopt resolutions and participate in various educational programs, such as the Certificate in Faith-based Community Organizing for Climate Justice, which is entirely online. This year, 41 students earned certificates focusing on climate justice and faith, demonstrating the growing commitment to this cause.

Congregations are also encouraged to engage in the “Season of Creation” from Sept. 1 to Oct. 4, promoting prayer and action to protect the environment. Various resources and initiatives, including a map of ELCA actions and a film series titled “Caring for the Earth,” further support this effort to raise awareness and stimulate action around climate justice.

Overall, the article underscores the theological and communal responses to climate change, spotlighting the active involvement of synods and congregations in creating a more sustainable future through faith-driven initiatives.
