Top High-Protein Fast Food Picks from a Dietitian

Fast-food restaurants are increasingly introducing high-protein menu options as customers look to achieve their protein goals. This shift comes as many are also concerned about affordability due to rising food prices.

Multiple quick-service restaurants, ranging from burger joints to coffee houses, are now promoting more protein-rich offerings.

On Tuesday, McDonald’s introduced a new menu visually showcasing items that have over 15 grams of protein, such as the Egg McMuffin, which contains 17 grams, and the McDouble, with 22 grams.

Despite the convenience and cost-effectiveness of fast food, nutritionists caution that consumers should pay attention to total calorie counts and other nutritional information.

Both Starbucks and Dunkin’ have embraced protein-centric beverage offerings.

Starbucks launched protein lattes and cold foam in September, introducing a 24-ounce Iced Vanilla Protein Latte that boasts 40 grams of protein. Meanwhile, Dunkin’ has unveiled protein milk-enhanced refreshers and other caffeinated options earlier this year.

Chipotle is set to introduce a new high-protein menu featuring a variety of entrees and snacks.

In January, Subway launched new Protein Pockets containing over 20 grams of protein. Chipotle has also recently revealed protein snack cups with protein content ranging from 15 to 81 grams.

Registered dietitian Lauren Kremer usually advises clients that aiming for 30 to 40 grams of protein per meal is ideal. However, she emphasized that consumers should consider their choices across various fast-food chains.

“I think this is great if we don’t also add excessive sugar or high levels of caffeine,” Kremer remarked regarding protein drinks available at Starbucks and Dunkin’.

Regarding items like the Protein Pockets, Kremer expressed appreciation for their nutritional profile: “With 20 grams of protein and under 500 calories, it’s an ideal meal choice.”

Chipotle also offers some of the highest protein content options, with one item reaching up to 81 grams.

“This is a substantial portion, and while 80 grams might be suitable for some, I would recommend sharing,” Kremer said, praising the quality of ingredients.

The Food and Drug Administration suggests a daily protein intake of 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. For a person weighing 150 pounds, this translates to approximately 55 grams daily.

However, excessive protein consumption can strain the kidneys, particularly for individuals with existing kidney issues.

In conclusion, nutritionists like Kremer emphasize that understanding individual dietary protein needs and goals is essential. It’s crucial to consider how much protein you require and how to achieve that without exceeding calorie limits.

There are also practical strategies, such as ordering a burger without the bun, to help reduce calorie intake while enjoying fast food.
