Balancing Diet and Active Living

In a recent conversation on YouTube with celebrity chef Sheetal Vanjari, actor Madhoo Shah reflected on her evolving relationship with food and fitness over the years. Known for her role in the film *Roja*, Madhoo shared that during her childhood, she embraced a vibrant lifestyle full of physical activity and culinary enjoyment. “I was a big foodie because I was always extremely active,” she recalled. “I’d wake up early to run, exercise, and dance, all before enjoying delicious meals prepared by my mother—like aloo bhaaji and hot chapatis. I never really counted calories. I ate and then I danced; I ate and I played.”

However, as time passed, her eating habits began to change. “With a more Westernized lifestyle, I started dining out and exploring different cuisines like Italian, Chinese, and Lebanese. Food became more of an experience than just sustenance. I realized that fitness is not only about activity but also about how much you’re consuming. I learned the importance of moderation and that 'less is more' when it comes to nutrition,” Madhoo explained, while making avocado toast.

On the subject of modern dining culture, Madhoo remarked, “Today, we live in a culture of excess. Food is often tied to social gatherings, creativity, and design. With so many options available, it’s crucial to be mindful of our consumption.”

Consultant dietitian Garima Goyal emphasized the importance of recognizing these shifts in our relationships with food. “When we are younger, high physical activity levels—from sports and dancing, for instance—allow us to burn energy more freely,” she noted. “However, as we age, metabolic rates decline and lifestyle changes often reduce the intensity or frequency of physical activity. This increased exposure to diverse cuisines and social dining can lead to higher calorie intake, making portion control essential.”

The idea that “less is more” is a fundamental aspect of nutrition. Goyal points out, “Health is not solely influenced by the types of food we eat but also by the quantities. Even healthy foods can lead to weight gain if consumed excessively, while being mindful of portion sizes can promote a better metabolic balance.”

Madhoo’s reflections also highlight a broader cultural trend, where food is increasingly associated with social interaction and entertainment. “Being aware of our consumption while relishing diverse cuisines allows us to cultivate a healthier relationship with food,” Goyal advised.

In conclusion, balancing physical activity with mindful eating is vital for long-term health. “Regular exercise, attention to portion sizes, and prioritizing quality nutrition enable people to enjoy food without sacrificing their wellbeing,” Goyal concluded.
