General Motors (GM) has announced plans to launch eyes-off automated driving by 2028, starting with the Cadillac Escalade IQ. This initiative merges the production scale of Super Cruise, GM’s driver assistance technology, with Cruise’s expertise in autonomous driving.
John Kaychi, Senior Group Product Manager for Automated Driving at GM, emphasizes that retail represents the third phase of autonomous vehicle development, following ridesharing and robotaxi services. This phase is seen as a significant test of the technology’s viability.
GM will rely on a thorough validation strategy that includes data from its production vehicles, a specialized high-precision development fleet, and synthetic environments designed to replicate rare scenarios. The validation process aims to ensure customer privacy while focusing on high-value operational domains.
Kaychi notes, “You can have the best technology in the world. But if customers don’t trust it, it won’t stick,” highlighting the importance of customer trust in the successful adoption of this technology.
