A new establishment in Upper Arlington is attracting both Ohio State students and local families by blending two beloved treats: coffee and ice cream. This innovative spot has quickly gained popularity since its opening.
Coffee + Cone at the Mallway opened its doors in January, thanks to owner Alyssa Litzinger, who recognized a need for a family-friendly venue in the neighborhood.
“My family and I live in the neighborhood, and we have five kids that go to the local schools,” Litzinger shared. “We saw a need for something for both kids and adults. The idea came to me in February of 2025 … so it was a full year from start to finish.”
Litzinger explained that the decision to offer both coffee and ice cream was strategic, aimed at catering to a diverse clientele.
“Ice cream is something that everyone can enjoy — kids, adults, everyone in between,” she noted. “Coffee appeals especially to adults, but many local high school and junior high students also love coffee drinks.”
Partnering with One Line Coffee, the shop features an ever-changing menu of specialty drinks alongside seasonal offerings. Litzinger mentioned that several items have quickly become favorites among Ohio State students.
“Our strawberry matcha has been quite popular, along with our pistachio latte and pistachio matcha,” she revealed. “We also offer a house-made honey whip topping that enhances our cold beverages.”
Recently, the menu expanded to feature ice cream sundaes with various toppings, including cookie dough and a house-made turtle sundae topped with pecans, sea salt, and chocolate sauce.
The shop’s design prioritizes efficiency, focusing on quick visits rather than extended stays.
“It’s a small space for grab-and-go convenience, but we wanted to create something unique that people can fit into their routines,” Litzinger commented.
Despite its compact size, Coffee + Cone has become a favored spot for many students and locals, especially as warmer weather approaches.
“In the mornings, we see many Ohio State students and young professionals coming in for coffee,” Litzinger said. “After school, there’s a surge of students, and weekends attract a completely different crowd.”
Angelina McGinty, a fourth-year architecture student who joined the team shortly after opening, noted that even with limited seating, students find ways to enjoy the space.
“The inside space is limited, yet it’s a good place for students during the day,” McGinty mentioned. “I see people bringing laptops and staying for a while.”
As business grew, Litzinger’s team adapted to the varying crowd dynamics.
“Initially, we were learning the various customer demographics,” she said. “We quickly figured out how to prepare for the different rushes and audience types.”
McGinty believes the menu’s diversity distinguishes Coffee + Cone from other local spots.
“The variety of coffee, matcha, chai, and the inclusion of ice cream definitely brings in customers for both,” she explained.
The shop has maintained consistent traffic, particularly during busy afternoons.
“We often have steady traffic; there’s a nice atmosphere,” McGinty reflected. “It can get hectic after school, but it’s always exciting.”
Social media has played a crucial role in the shop’s rapid growth, attracting new patrons and fostering a loyal customer base, according to Litzinger.
“When we opened, several food influencers posted about us, and some went viral in Columbus,” she explained. “We’ve seen many repeat customers as a result.”
Looking to the future, Litzinger plans to broaden the menu further.
“We’re introducing a dairy-free soft serve option soon, starting with strawberry, due to numerous requests, and a blueberry lemon muffin latte will debut for spring,” she added.
Litzinger expressed immense gratitude for the community’s support.
“We’ve been overwhelmed,” she said. “The support from Upper Arlington and the greater central Ohio area has been incredible.”
