87-Year-Old Fitness Instructor Empowers Seniors

**Embracing Fitness in Later Years: Finding Joy and Community**

Aging is a natural part of life, and for many, it comes with various challenges. However, it also opens doors to new opportunities for vitality and joy. Jan Dorgan, an inspiring fitness instructor from Davenport, Iowa, embodies this philosophy. At the remarkable age of 87, Jan has dedicated herself to helping others overcome age-related obstacles through the power of exercise.

“As we get older, our bodies change,” says Jan. Yet, she believes that starting the day with exercise can drastically improve your energy levels and overall sense of well-being, making you feel accomplished and invigorated.

For nearly 25 years, Jan has led exercise classes at CASI, the Center for Active Seniors Incorporated in Davenport. “It keeps me active and hopefully sharpens my mind,” she explains.

The classes aim to meet two essential goals: to promote happiness and health among participants. “We want to encourage everyone to come to CASI; there is something for everyone here,” she adds.

While the physical benefits of exercise are undeniable, many attendees cite the social interactions as a key reason for their loyalty to Jan’s sessions. “I made some new friends here, and I love Jan,” shares Linda Roseman, one of Jan’s dedicated students. “She makes it fun!”

The importance of social connections cannot be overstated, especially as we age. “The social aspect is incredibly important,” Jan notes. This camaraderie was particularly significant for her when she lost her husband of fifty years in 2009. “Having a reason to get up in the morning and being surrounded by people who understand what you’re going through was invaluable.”

For many, the support system found in Jan’s class helps combat feelings of loneliness and isolation. Linda, who lost her husband just a year ago, expresses similar sentiments: “There’s so much more than exercise here; there’s even a grief support group that I attend.”

Strength truly lies in numbers, as the community among participants fosters an environment of love and encouragement. “Everyone helps everyone,” Jan emphasizes. “I consider all these people my friends.” After nearly a quarter-century of teaching, Jan looks forward to continuing her work for years to come. “It’s been a blessing,” she remarks, joyfully reflecting on her time spent at CASI.

**Conclusion**

Incorporating fitness into our daily routine as we age can lead to improved physical health, increased energy, and meaningful relationships. Whether you’re participating in a structured class or simply enjoying casual exercise with friends, the essence is to keep moving and stay connected.
