Uplift Investors, a Buyout Firm, Secures $670 Million for Investment in Legal and Additional Services

Uplift Investors, founded by Brad Skaf, Will Hausberg, and Doug Rosenstein, recently closed its first private equity fund with $670 million to target niche service businesses, particularly in the legal market. Amid challenges in fundraising due to economic conditions and the evolving AI landscape, Uplift’s approach leverages a “5-5-5 Framework,” focusing on five sectors and identifying microsectors to build platforms.

One significant investment is Orion Legal MSO, a managed services organization supporting plaintiff law firms with various operational functions, allowing firms to maintain their ownership while benefiting from enhanced infrastructure. Uplift also invested in IMS Legal Strategies, which offers services like expert-witness consulting, further emphasizing their strategy in legal services.

The founders’ backgrounds at Gridiron Capital and other firms lend credibility, and their focus on services businesses aims to improve operational efficiency across fragmented markets. However, potential regulatory challenges could affect the viability of the MSO model, particularly regarding law firm management. Overall, Uplift appears to be carving a path for private equity investment in sectors traditionally kept at bay by legal restrictions.
