Indiana University’s Leadership in Generative AI
Indiana University continues to garner accolades for its pioneering efforts in generative AI. Recently, the institution was honored with the AnalytiXIN AI Transformation Award at TechPoint’s 2026 Mira Awards.
IU earned this recognition for its extensive, institution-wide initiative in generative AI that reaches nearly 120,000 students, faculty, and staff.
The Mira Awards, which are often dubbed the “Oscars of Indiana Tech,” celebrate innovation within the state’s digital economy, recognizing organizations that are driving significant technological progress.
Award judges praised IU’s strategy of providing broad access to AI tools, paired with structured training and transparent governance. This approach allows for the responsible and effective integration of AI across teaching, research, and administrative operations.

A significant milestone in IU’s efforts is the launch of GenAI 101. This course teaches 20 practical AI skills and has already benefited tens of thousands of learners. Now accessible to the global audience, it provides users with hands-on experience directly applicable in academic and professional contexts.
IU has also initiated one of the largest implementations of ChatGPT Edu in higher education, enhancing access to state-of-the-art AI tools.
The university’s AI endeavors align with its IU 2030 strategic plan, integrating with three key foundational pillars:
- Student Success and Opportunity
- Transformative Research and Creativity
- Service to Our State and Beyond
Underpinned by a solid governance framework and a clear roadmap for ongoing integration, IU’s centralized hub at ai.iu.edu offers tools, guidance, and best practices to empower faculty, staff, and students in utilizing AI confidently and responsibly.
“This recognition reflects IU’s commitment to implementing AI thoughtfully and expansively, placing people at the core,” stated Justin Hodgson, associate professor of digital rhetoric and director of the Digital Gardener Initiative. “We’re not merely introducing new technologies; we’re cultivating an ecosystem that supports experimentation, establishes clear boundaries, and energizes our community to innovate across teaching, research, and administration. That’s what makes our efforts genuinely transformative.”
This progress is further bolstered by support from Lilly Endowment, whose grant funding is enhancing IU’s AI capabilities, expanding training opportunities, and advancing the use of generative AI across the university’s academic and administrative missions. This initiative is rooted in IU’s emerging Human + AI Learning Model, which emphasizes the cultivation of uniquely human skills, such as critical thinking, ethical reasoning, empathy, and communication, alongside essential AI literacy.
By combining accessibility, education, and real-world application, IU is establishing a scalable model for higher education, preparing students and staff for an ever-evolving digital landscape.
Since 1999, the Mira Awards have recognized Indiana’s foremost technology innovators, disruptors, business leaders, and game changers. These awards celebrate the state’s most significant accomplishments across various industries, highlighting the innovative spirit that characterizes Indiana’s digital economy.
