FAA Communication Problem Fixed After Disrupting East Coast Flights | Travel

On September 21, travelers on the East Coast experienced significant delays and cancellations due to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) equipment outage that halted flight operations at major airports for several hours. The issue stemmed from a telecommunications outage caused by an Amtrak construction crew that accidentally cut into a fiber line in New Jersey.

Several key airports were affected, including Newark Liberty, JFK, Philadelphia International, LaGuardia, and Boston Logan, all of which had to implement ground stops. By around 6 p.m. ET, the situation was resolved, and operations resumed, though some travelers continued to face delays.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford expressed regret over the timing and its impact on travelers, emphasizing the need for safety in airspace management. Newark reported the highest disruption rates, with 55% of flights canceled and 11% delayed. United Airlines was notably affected, canceling 356 flights and delaying 690 others.

The event highlighted concerns over the aging U.S. air traffic control system, which is currently undergoing upgrades funded by a $12.5 billion investment from Congress. Travelers were advised to check with airlines for further updates and manage their travel plans accordingly.
