Improve Enforcement
Charleston’s initiative to reassess its tourism management plan is commendable. The competition for parking spaces, restaurant reservations, and city services significantly affects residents’ quality of life. This review should also analyze how an excess of hotel accommodations drives tourism and its impact on local livability.
Importantly, the decline in livability can be traced to various factors beyond tourism, including inadequate enforcement of parking restrictions, speed limits in residential zones, regulations on truck traffic in historic areas, and insufficient adherence to noise and zoning ordinances, which are frequently overlooked for developers’ interests.
By rigorously enforcing existing laws, the city can enhance its residents’ livability immediately.

Amid discussions surrounding our 250th celebration of independence, it seems not every American feels joyfully united. Our Founding Fathers crafted a document and a Constitution that championed the voice of the people, an idea that has resonated worldwide. Yet, within those voices lie the troubling roots of societal divisions that we confront today.
From sexism and racism to various forms of skepticism and elitism, these schisms permeate our cultural fabric. Politically, we see similar divides manifest in the form of libertarianism, Marxism, conservatism, liberalism, and more.
Let’s take a moment to breathe and embrace ideals that uplift us—romanticism, volunteerism, and humanitarianism. Especially, let’s rally around the “ism” that fosters unity and pride—patriotism.
