SEMCO Energy and UPPCO to Acquire Xcel Energy Operations
In a recent press release, Xcel Energy announced plans for its natural gas and electric operations in Gogebic and Ontonagon counties to be purchased by SEMCO Energy and UPPCO. This transition, pending regulatory approval, will transfer approximately 6,000 natural gas customers to SEMCO and 9,000 electric customers to UPPCO.
A Focus on Local Service
Xcel Energy aims to enhance the service quality for its customers by placing them with utilities dedicated to serving Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Karl Hoesly, president of Xcel Energy-Wisconsin and Michigan, emphasized the commitment to a smooth transition for both customers and employees. He stated, “This transaction will provide focused investments by SEMCO and UPPCO, ensuring customer needs are met reliably in the long term.”
No Immediate Changes for Customers
Currently, Xcel assures customers that service will continue uninterrupted with no immediate changes to billing, rates, or customer service processes. Notifications about any future changes will be sent well in advance to customers.
Commitment to Reliable Service
Marc Simone, president of SEMCO ENERGY Gas Company, expressed optimism about the new opportunity, highlighting the commitment to safe, reliable, and affordable service. Similarly, UPPCO’s president and CEO, Gradon Haehnel, reiterated their dedication to providing dependable service rooted in local expertise.
Timeline for Transition
The transition will occur gradually and will only proceed after necessary state and federal approvals, with an expected closure in 2027. In the meantime, customers should continue to engage with their existing energy providers for their needs.
