The Pinal County Planning & Zoning Commission has temporarily stalled the development of a proposed 500-megawatt battery energy storage system and a natural gas power plant near Maricopa. Horseshoe BESS LLC, a subsidiary of Epic Star Energy Inc., sought approvals that were deferred to a later date. The commission narrowly avoided outright rejection of a crucial amendment, voting 5-4 against it. The project is set to be located in Hidden Valley, 10 miles from Maricopa, on land owned by Desert Leasing LLC. The development will include energy storage, a gas plant, an evaporation pond for wastewater, and necessary infrastructure to connect to the electrical grid.
