October 8 Discussion on Advancing a New Wave of Materials Analysis

Upcoming Seminar: “Building a New Era of Atom-by-Atom Materials Characterization with Electron Ptychography”

Speaker: Pinshane Y. Huang
Position: Racheff Faculty Scholar, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
Date: Thursday, Oct. 8
Time: 3:05 p.m.
Location: 10 Sparks Building, Penn State University Park Campus

Overview:
Join us for an insightful talk as part of the Penn State Department of Materials Science and Engineering’s (MatSE) 590 Seminar series. Pinshane Y. Huang will discuss the transformative potential of electron ptychography in materials characterization, achieving unprecedented spatial resolution down to 20 picometers.

Highlights of the Talk:

  • Visualizing Thermal Vibrations: Huang’s research utilizes ptychography to observe thermal vibrations atom-by-atom.
  • 3D Atomic Coordinates: The talk will cover techniques for recovering 3D atomic structures in 2D moiré materials.
  • Accessibility of Advanced Techniques: Huang emphasizes how ptychography can be employed to achieve remarkable spatial resolution (0.44 angstrom) without the need for expensive aberration correctors in electron microscopes.

Speaker Background:
Huang holds a doctorate in applied and engineering physics from Cornell University and a bachelor’s in physics from Carleton College. Her research specializes in transmission electron microscopy and ptychography focused on two-dimensional and nanoelectronic materials. She has received multiple prestigious awards, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers and a Packard Fellowship.

About the MatSE 590 Seminar Series:

The MatSE 590 Seminar series aims to provide graduate students, faculty, and the public with lectures from invited speakers across the fields of academia and industry. The seminars promote research sharing, discussion of emerging topics, and interdisciplinary collaboration in materials science and engineering.

Support:
The series is supported by industry collaborations through the Friends of MatSE program.
