Newark is poised for a musical revival thanks to a new ordinance approved by the City Council. This ordinance paves the way for a live entertainment venue in downtown Newark, along with allowing restaurants and taverns to create dance areas for late-night musical acts. The changes in zoning codes from the late 90s had previously stifled such options, leading to a lack of diverse entertainment, according to City Manager Tom Coleman.
With feedback from residents highlighting the need for improved quality of life and entertainment options, several groups—including Demitri Theodoropoulos’s proposal for “Stella’s”—are eager to contribute to this revitalization. The goal is to attract both residents and visitors, offering a space for live music and community engagement. Despite the challenges posed by a $2.7 million budget deficit and a decrease in paid parking, the initiative is seen as a potential driver for economic growth in the area. While it may be difficult to attract major national acts like in the past, Newark is optimistic about finding its place in today’s music scene once again.
