Wang Weiming: Upcoming Initiative to Enhance Automotive Standards at the 2026 TEDA Forum

The 2026 Tianjin Automotive Forum began on September 19, highlighting significant advancements and challenges within China’s automotive sector. Wang Weiming, chief engineer at MIIT, noted the industry’s robust ecosystem that includes materials, components, vehicles, and manufacturing equipment. Key technological achievements were mentioned, such as lithium-ion battery energy density reaching 300 Wh/kg and advancements in fast charging and human-machine interaction.

China continues to lead in global automobile and new-energy vehicle production, attracting foreign companies like Tesla and fostering stronger ties with multinationals such as Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz. The country has taken active steps in crafting international standards and regulatory documents, solidifying its role in global supply chains.

However, challenges persist, including deficits in high-end smart chips, operating systems, and increasing competition in battery development and autonomous driving. Domestic market demand is weak, profits in manufacturing are decreasing, and irrational competition and trade barriers are concerns.

To address these issues, the MIIT plans to enhance enterprise innovation, promote new-energy vehicles—particularly in rural areas, improve production quality and consistency, and advocate for international cooperation in innovation. Their comprehensive approach includes a “15th Five-Year Plan” focused on intelligent connected new-energy vehicles as the industry’s framework for development.
