The recent performance of Hungarian industry has shown promising growth as summer came to a close. According to preliminary figures from the Central Statistical Office (KSH), industrial production in August 2026 increased by 8.7% compared to the same month last year. Adjusting for working days, the increase remains the same, indicating that calendar effects were minimal. Compared to July, production rose by 1.0%.
July also pointed to a recovery, with a year-over-year increase of 4.7% and a month-over-month gain of 1.7%, contributing positively to the annual performance so far. Over the first eight months of 2026, industrial production was up by 3.4% compared to the same period in 2025.
Despite the overall positive trend, the data reveals a mixed picture, primarily driven by significant growth in automotive manufacturing and the production of computers, electronics, and optical products. However, several subsectors, such as electrical equipment and food and beverage industries, reported declining figures.
Additionally, inflation is impacting production, with noticeable price increases in exports. While producer prices in the industry stabilized earlier in the year, they rose in August, particularly in the energy sector, which saw a staggering 48.7% increase year-over-year.
In summary, while Hungarian industry is buoyed by strong automotive and electronics exports, it faces structural and pricing challenges, particularly outside these core sectors.
