During this year’s Chuseok holiday, Japan emerged as the most preferred travel destination for Koreans, with Osaka, Fukuoka, and Tokyo being the top three cities, according to Trip.com Group’s data. The data, covering both domestic and international bookings for the four-day holiday starting Thursday, indicated a preference for nearby and smaller locations.
This year, Chuseok, which typically spans three days, is extended to four days, running from Friday to Sunday. Other favored short-haul destinations include Vietnam’s Danyang and Nha Trang, as well as Shanghai, China.
Interestingly, booking patterns revealed that many travelers opted to extend their break, with a 5% increase in departures on Wednesday compared to Thursday, the holiday’s official start day.
However, health officials have cautioned travelers to Japan, as the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency reported 549 measles cases there as of late August—the highest number in a decade—due to the disease’s highly contagious nature. Travelers are advised to check their vaccination records before departing.
