Disney Currently Has No Plans to Acquire Epic Games but Has More Collaborations in Progress

Disney Addresses Rumors of Epic Games Buyout

For months, speculation has surrounded Disney’s potential acquisition of Epic Games, the maker of the popular game Fortnite. However, Disney has now clarified that such an acquisition is not in consideration at the moment.

Speaking at Bloomberg’s Screentime event, Disney executive Dana Walden stated, “Those are not the conversations we’re having right now. But we have a great relationship.” Walden highlighted that Disney has already invested $1.5 billion in Epic for an equity stake.

While the idea of Disney buying Epic Games has never seemed entirely implausible—given Disney’s financial capabilities—the current focus appears to be on strengthening their partnership. Walden emphasized that they aim to create “transformational” games together, with several launches expected in the next two years.

In February 2024, Disney announced a collaboration to develop an “Entertainment Universe” connected to Fortnite. A trailer showcased a theme-park-like world featuring Disney properties, including Pixar, Marvel, ESPN, and more.

Fortnite has previously seen significant collaborations with franchises such as Marvel and Star Wars, and it has even integrated elements from Disneyland. Other Disney properties, including Pirates of the Caribbean, The Incredibles, Avatar, Hercules, and Toy Story, have also been part of collaborations.

The most notable upcoming collaboration involves Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to tie in with Fortnite as Chapter 8 unfolds.
