Fitness competitions are a great way to push your limits and test your abilities, but many of them fall under the radar. One such event is Athx, a competition that emphasizes three central aspects of fitness: strength, endurance, and metabolic conditioning. Spanning a punishing 2.5 hours, Athx tests athletes across a variety of rigorous challenges, making it a unique experience for both seasoned gym enthusiasts and aspiring hybrid athletes.

Athx distinguishes itself not only through its structure but also by integrating essential rest periods, allowing participants to recharge and perform at their peak during successive rounds. It covers everything from max lifts to peak aerobic capacity, concluding with an intense final challenge.

Having started in 2023 with five events throughout the UK, Athx is now expanding its horizons, with plans to reach the continent in 2026. I recently attended the opening event of the 2026 season at ExCeL London, eager to witness whether Athx was on the verge of becoming a household name.

The Structure of Athx Workouts

Athx workouts unfold in distinct phases, beginning with a comprehensive warm-up. The first stage is the strength zone, where competitors have six minutes to achieve a one-rep max (1RM) in the strict overhead press. This is followed by six minutes allocated to back squats, emphasizing a three-rep standard. Finally, participants have eight minutes to secure a five-rep max in the deadlift.

A brief 10-minute recovery allows competitors to refuel before entering the endurance zone, which consists of 22 minutes of continuous running and rowing. Athletes alternate between a run and a row at intervals of 500m, 750m, or 1km, depending on their division.

Following another recovery period, athletes prepare for the metcon (metabolic conditioning), which has a 25-minute time limit but is designed for maximum speed. The finale includes a series of demanding exercises such as ski-ergs, dumbbell snatches, sandbag carries, box jump-overs, walking lunges, and burpee broad jumps.

What It Takes to Compete in Athx

Athx serves as an important benchmark for overall athletic performance. Competitors who excel in strength may struggle in endurance, and vice versa. This balance is what separates the elite athletes from the rest.

Personally, I found myself entering an unfamiliar and challenging environment. Although I had the autonomy to choose my weights, the strength zone posed a notable challenge. With no prior experience in one-rep max attempts, I had to be strategic about my lifting. I opted not to push for higher weights knowing that a significant endurance challenge awaited me afterward.

Heavy lifts create a unique form of systemic fatigue. Athletes have only a few minutes to recover before switching to running and rowing. I focused on maintaining a sustainable pace during the endurance part to ensure I finished strong, even though each return to the rower felt increasingly taxing.

The metcon segment was uncharted territory for me, and by the end, my legs felt almost incapacitated. I recognized that my choices during the longer rest period may have hindered my transition back into intense efforts; remaining stationary can lead to increased lactic acid buildup, making it harder to regain momentum.

How Does Athx Compare to Hyrox?

Athx and Hyrox are often compared, but they differ in structure and focus. While Hyrox emphasizes aerobic conditioning, punctuated by lighter strength stations, Athx weaves in lengthy challenges and recovery periods, allowing for genuinely heavy strength training as well as endurance and high-intensity conditioning. This makes Athx a more versatile competition, while the more specialized format of Hyrox may appeal to a different crowd.
