New PET-CT Scanner Coming to Fairbanks Community
Every minute counts for patients needing lifesaving diagnoses from a PET-CT scanner. Thanks to local support, this vital service is set to become available soon in Fairbanks.
Understanding PET and CT
PET, or Positron Emission Tomography, is essential for the early detection and treatment of diseases like cancer and heart conditions. CT, or computed tomography, complements this imaging process, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning.
Current Situation
Currently, the nearest PET scanner is in Anchorage, posing challenges for those unable to travel. To address this, the Fairbanks Community Hospital Foundation, led by Jeff Cook, initiated the $6 million “Imaging for Impact” fundraising campaign. They have successfully raised $3,529,097.06 and continue to seek donations.
Community Support
Interestingly, one of the largest donation groups per capita is from the small community of Ester, showcasing their commitment to the project.
Project Timeline
If all goes as planned, the PET-CT scanner could be operational by March or April 2027, with an anticipated use of five to ten patients a day. The necessary equipment has already been ordered.
Current Preparations
Renovations for the 3,500 square foot space at the Fairbanks Imaging & Breast Center are underway. Changes include the removal of walls, lead lining in rooms, and floor leveling to accommodate the scanner.
Impact on Healthcare
The availability of a PET-CT scanner is crucial for early disease detection, particularly for those unable to travel to Anchorage. Cook emphasizes that many community members have been affected by critical health issues and the scanner will significantly improve access to care.
In addition, timely delivery of necessary isotopes for the scanner, which are vital for effective imaging, is being streamlined in collaboration with Alaska Airlines. This ensures patients won’t face wasted trips due to delays.
Long-term Benefits
The addition of this modern technology not only enhances patient care but also supports the recruitment and retention of medical professionals in Fairbanks, addressing concerns about local health care availability.
