Fresh Survey Shows Pets’ Impact on Vehicle Features and Travel Arrangements

Road trips in America are increasingly being planned with pets in mind, influencing everything from travel decisions to vehicle features. A recent Subaru-commissioned survey revealed that 73% of pet owners prefer to drive rather than fly to accommodate their furry friends, with 68% adjusting their holiday plans to include pets.

Key findings from a survey of 2,000 American drivers and pet owners include:

  • Vehicle Priorities: 32% prioritize space for pets, passengers, and luggage; 29% value visibility; and 27% prefer easy-to-clean interiors.
  • Preference for Pets: 51% would rather travel with their pets than human companions.
  • Generational Trends: 75% of Gen Z and 70% of millennials have taken pets on trips, compared to 58% of Gen X and 40% of baby boomers.
  • Holiday Adjustments: Many respondents alter their holiday plans, with nearly half starting to plan pet-friendly trips at least three weeks in advance.

This trend emphasizes the importance for automakers to consider pet-friendly designs, making it clear that pets are an integral part of American travel culture.
