Fraud Charges Filed Against Woman Posing as Travel Agent
FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. (WIS) – Ann Malphrus has been arrested and charged with breach of trust after allegedly defrauding clients in a travel-related scheme, according to the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office.
Malphrus allegedly posed as a travel agent, claiming to arrange air travel for her clients. However, victims discovered that the bookings were not valid, and they did not receive the services for which they paid.
One victim, Austin Spolski, reported a loss of $10,760, showing Venmo receipts for unfulfilled travel plans, including a trip to Disney. “I worked really hard to make that money… but my biggest thing is my kids aren’t going to have the experience or the memories of Disney,” Spolski said.
Malphrus, identified as a revenue specialist for the City of Hardeeville, has been placed on unpaid administrative leave while the investigation continues. The sheriff’s office indicates there may be more victims across multiple states.
