HBO’s Lanterns has made history for all the wrong reasons, setting a record for the lowest audience score among DCU projects on Rotten Tomatoes. Following its Season 1 finale, the show’s Popcornmeter score has plummeted to 70%, dropping significantly from its initial higher ratings due to intense fan backlash.
The discontent primarily revolves around the shocking finale twist, revealing that Sheriff Kerry Kane murdered Hal Jordan—a decision that left many viewers questioning why a non-superpowered character would defeat the legendary Green Lantern. Complaints also highlighted the lack of action, subpar visual effects, and comparisons to older CW superhero shows, particularly criticizing John Stewart’s first flight sequence.
Another point of frustration was John Stewart not donning his Green Lantern suit. Showrunner Chris Mundy explained that the choice was meant to serve the story’s poetic conclusion, but fans largely rejected this reasoning, wishing for a more traditional superhero portrayal.
As of now, HBO has not released any viewership numbers for the finale nor made any announcements regarding a potential Season 2.
