Celebrating 15 Years of Heritage at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) – For many families, the journey into their history begins with a place where they can see, experience, and celebrate it. This is the essence of LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, a museum in Downtown Los Angeles dedicated to honoring Latino history and its contributions to LA and California.
Interim CEO Tracy M. Serrano-Ruiz highlighted the museum’s mission, stating, “Our history has not been told in modern day schooling.” This Saturday, the museum will celebrate its quinceañera with a special reception and dinner.
A Vision for Visibility
LA Plaza was established out of a desire for Latino representation in cultural narratives, a vision championed by former Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina and Congressman Esteban Edward Torres. Serrano-Ruiz expressed pride in sharing these important stories, offering visitors a space to explore Latino culture.
Visiting LA Plaza is part of a broader DTLA experience. Visitors can take the Metro, exploring El Pueblo and Olvera Street before heading to the museum, which features two floors of galleries that dive deep into the area’s history.
A Personal Connection
Board member Blanca Aguirre shared how the museum allows her to celebrate her heritage with her children. On this anniversary, she feels that LA Plaza is entering “into this new phase of womanhood.” Aguirre enjoys bringing her 8-year-old and toddler to the museum so they can connect with their heritage.
She appreciates the museum’s hands-on experience, making LA Plaza feel like a second home. “Not a lot of museums… allow that,” she noted, underscoring the significance of interactive exhibitions for her family.
Upcoming Events
Looking ahead, LA Plaza will host its Día de los Muertos Family Day on October 25. This free event will feature art workshops, galleries, and live music, providing another opportunity for families to engage with the museum’s offerings and celebrate the traditions associated with Día de los Muertos.
Admission to LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes is free, and the museum operates Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4:45 p.m.
