Foliage season in New Hampshire bursts with color, and the state’s covered bridges transform scenic drives into memorable experiences each fall.

The Beauty of Covered Bridges

New Hampshire is home to over 50 covered bridges as reported by the state’s tourism office, which has organized a fall covered bridge tour. This year, travel experts have curated four distinct tours across various regions:

  • Dartmouth/Lake Sunapee Region
  • White Mountains Region
  • Great North Woods Region
  • Monadnock Region

Explore the Tours

These journeys take you along scenic routes that meander through picturesque towns, ensuring visitors experience the state’s magical landscapes:

  • Some bridges accommodate vehicle traffic, while others are foot traffic only.

The Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge, which spans the Connecticut River between New Hampshire and Vermont, holds the title of the longest two-span covered bridge in the world at 449 feet. Historically significant, it served as a toll bridge between “dry” Vermont and “wet” New Hampshire, and has earned recognition as a romantic “kissing bridge.”

For those willing to explore, the New Hampshire Division of Travel & Tourism Development also features tours showcasing other notable bridges, like the Pier Bridge in Newport (built in 1907) and the Sawyer’s Crossing Bridge in Swanzy (featured on Chesterfield cigarette cartons in the 1950s).

Plan your road trip through New Hampshire’s covered bridges and experience the enchanting scenery—perfect for capturing the essence of fall.
