Todd Johnston has left the Morrisey administration, where he served as deputy chief of staff and director of the state’s energy, infrastructure, and competitiveness. He confirmed his departure in a phone interview, citing a new job opportunity in Washington, D.C. Johnston expressed pride in his achievements, including over $96 billion in private sector investments and significant infrastructure improvements totaling over $5 billion.
Taking on a role aimed at marketing West Virginia as an energy powerhouse, Johnston also managed efforts involving multiple agencies to attract businesses and reduce regulatory barriers. He played a key role in advancing the “50 by 50” energy generation plan and crafting legislation to incentivize data centers.
His exit comes amid a series of high profile departures within the administration, although Johnston stated that his departure is unrelated to recent developments regarding nuclear energy projects. The governor’s communications director expressed appreciation for Johnston’s service and his desire to spend more time with family.
