Alex Hall’s Workout and Conditioning Tips for Olympic Skiers

ALEX HALL KNOWS that slopestyle skiers often carry a laid-back image, partly due to their sport’s emphasis on smoothness and creativity. However, behind this chill persona lies a fierce dedication to training and skill development.

“Because it’s a pretty relaxed sport, people think that we don’t work too hard,” explains Hall, a three-time Olympian. “But our training manifests in different ways. We spend a lot of time skiing on the mountain and less time in the gym, though people often misinterpret that as laziness.”

Skill development is crucial for Hall, particularly when it comes to executing complex tricks like the “pretzel.” This impressive move involves leaping off a jump, completing a 1080-degree spin, followed by three full rotations, then reversing momentum for a 900-degree spin before landing backward. Such finesse helped him secure a top position at the 2022 Beijing Games.

Hall’s training regime may defy traditional expectations. Instead of heavy weights, he focuses on enhancing core strength and stamina, opting to spend more time outdoors whenever possible.

One of Hall’s preferred workouts is ski touring, a winter activity akin to hiking. “You hike up with your skis and then ski back down,” he explains. “It’s an excellent cardio workout that builds stamina and endurance while allowing you to enjoy the outdoors.” If mountains aren’t accessible, consider a 20 to 30-minute hike while carrying a 20-pound backpack to achieve a similar effect.
