News from Japan: Prudential Life Insurance Scandal
Date: Oct 8, 2026, 17:07 (JST)
A report from a third-party investigation has revealed that a corporate culture overly focused on sales performance led to fraudulent activities by employees of Prudential Life Insurance Co. Officials struggled to manage top sales performers due to weak managerial authority.
In response, the Tokyo-based insurer plans to revise its compensation structure, heavily incentivized for new contracts, and will introduce a guaranteed minimum salary scheme in 2027. President and CEO Hiromitsu Tokumaru publicly apologized for the situation, acknowledging the erosion of trust.
To demonstrate accountability, Tokumaru and two other executives will return 30% of their monthly pay for three months due to a series of issues, including a scandal that occurred during a voluntary sales suspension.
