Xcel Energy Transfers Operations to SEMCO and UPPCO
Minneapolis — Xcel Energy has announced the sale of its Michigan natural gas operations to SEMCO Energy Gas Company and its electric operations to Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO). This transition, subject to regulatory approval, will affect approximately 6,000 natural gas customers and 9,000 electric customers in Gogebic and Ontonagon counties, who will be moving to service providers with strong local ties.
The companies are working closely with regulators and community stakeholders to ensure a seamless transition, aiming to maintain reliability and continue infrastructure investments. Customers can expect no immediate changes to billing, rates, or service processes during the transition, which is set to close in 2027.
Karl Hoesly, president of Xcel Energy-Wisconsin and Michigan, emphasized the commitment to a smooth transition, while SEMCO’s Marc Simone remarked on the opportunity to enhance energy services in the Upper Peninsula. Gradon Haehnel of UPPCO also expressed confidence in providing safe and dependable service backed by local experience.
Customers are advised to continue operating as usual with their current energy providers, with updates to be communicated as the regulatory process progresses.
