Bakersfield, Calif., is experiencing an extended period of unusual heat, with temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above seasonal norms, thanks to a heat dome trapping heat at the surface. Meteorologist Brody Moore from the National Weather Service anticipates temperatures will drop into the low 80s and upper 70s this weekend, influenced by a low-pressure system moving through California.
Higher energy bills may result as residents have been using air conditioning more frequently during this heat wave. PG&E spokesperson Jeff Smith highlighted that air conditioning significantly drives up energy costs, especially in warm weather. He recommends maintaining cooler indoor temperatures by using natural ventilation during cooler hours and setting thermostats wisely.
The forecast also hints at potential rain next week due to tropical moisture from Tropical Storm Rachel. However, chances remain low, with estimates between 20% and 40%. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and seek shade as necessary.
