US Immigration Authorities Detain Acclaimed Kashmiri Filmmaker Arfat Sheikh | Entertainment

Arfat Sheikh, an award-winning filmmaker from Kashmir, has been detained by U.S. immigration officials after entering the country on a student visa in 2019. Sheikh had been pursuing graduate studies in film at Georgia State University and filed for asylum in 2020. His family and friends confirmed that he was arrested on September 24 at Washington Dulles International Airport after returning from California.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that Sheikh had overstayed his lawful admission and clarified that a pending asylum application does not grant legal status. DHS assured that he would receive due process.

Sheikh is known for his acclaimed feature film “Saffron Kingdom,” which won multiple awards, including Best Feature Film at various film festivals. The film addresses the conflict in Kashmir, depicting a family’s journey from the region during the 1990s to the U.S.

The detention has raised concerns among rights advocates, who argue that immigration crackdowns have endangered due process and free speech rights, particularly affecting ethnic minorities.
