Mi Casita: A Fort Payne Legacy

FORT PAYNE, Ala. (WHNT) — For 34 years, the Rodriguez family has been sharing their Mexican heritage through Mi Casita, a restaurant that has become a beloved fixture in the community.

Community Roots
Miguel Rodriguez, who operates the restaurant with his siblings, reflects on their family journey: “We’re just happy to be here with, you know, Fort Payne. We’ve been here for years, and hopefully we’ll be here for many more.”

History and Support
Mi Casita opened in 1992, started by Miguel’s father, uncle, and friends. Initially driving from Rome, Georgia, his father was dedicated to making the restaurant a success. “My dad just wanted to try to buy it for himself,” Rodriguez recalls.

At its inception, Mi Casita was the only Mexican restaurant in Fort Payne, receiving unwavering support from the community. “They’re always supportive of anything that ever happened,” Rodriguez stated.

Family Affair
The restaurant is a true family endeavor, involving cousins, friends, and even Rodriguez’s children in its operations. Many customers see it as more than just a dining spot; it’s a gathering place where friendships are cemented over shared meals.

Longtime patron Niki Hunter noted the deep familial ties: “I remember coming here after football games or church. They have lost some family members over the years, but the warmth of the atmosphere remains.”

Community Growth
Over the years, the restaurant has expanded both in size and popularity. A recent renovation added a party room and improved the dining area. Rodriguez cherishes the legacy his father established, stating, “He left us something beautiful.”

Future Aspirations
With an eye on the future, Rodriguez hopes the family tradition continues: “Hopefully we’ll be here for another 34 years. Next time it won’t be me; it’ll be one of the grandkids.”
