USDA Revamps Criteria for Renewable Energy Funding

Washington, D.C. (RFD-TV News) — Farmers looking to access federal funding for renewable energy initiatives will soon be required to pay for project costs upfront. The USDA is revising its Rural Energy for America Program, mandating that projects must be completed and operational before producers or rural businesses can submit applications. Applicants will need to provide tangible data on project expenditures, energy savings, and system performance metrics.

Additionally, USDA is shifting to a single national competition and intends to implement a new online application system aimed at reducing paperwork and ensuring that federal funds support projects with demonstrable success.

In related news, a bipartisan Senate bill aims to expedite federal permitting processes for energy and infrastructure undertakings, potentially lowering delays and costs. The American Petroleum Institute projects that comprehensive permitting reforms could lead to savings of over $55 billion on electricity bills for households in the next decade while simultaneously creating 700,000 job opportunities. The Senate is slated to discuss this bill following the midterm elections.
