Identifying and Managing Fall Allergies in Pets: A Guide for the Crescent City Community

Join the NOLA Dogs Race to the Rescue 5K!

If you’re in the mood for fun this weekend while helping local animals, lace up your walking shoes and consider dressing up your dog! The NOLA Dogs Race to the Rescue 5K Run/Walk returns on October 11 at the historic Metairie Cemetery, uniting runners, walkers, pet enthusiasts, and local rescue organizations for a day dedicated to aiding animals in need.

Now in its ninth year, the Race to the Rescue has raised around $225,000 for local rescues. The event typically attracts nearly 1,000 participants of all ages, making it a family-friendly occasion.

Benefiting Local Organizations

This year, proceeds will go to six local rescue organizations, including:

  • Animal Rescue New Orleans
  • Take Paws Rescue
  • The Inner Pup
  • Trampled Rose Rescue & Rehab
  • Trap Dat Cat
  • Zeus’ Rescues

Event Schedule

The festivities kick off at 8 a.m. with a dog parade featuring all pets and their humans. Costumes are encouraged, and there’s no fee to join in on the parade, which is led by the BIG FUN Brass Band. The 5K race starts at 8:30 a.m., following a scenic 3.1-mile route through the oak-lined streets of the cemetery. Note: the race is for humans only, but dogs can cheer from the sidelines and participate in other activities.

Post-Race Celebrations

After the race, attendees can enjoy the Blessing of the Pets by Heaven’s Pets at 9:30 a.m. This free blessing celebrates the animals in our lives and honors those we’ve lost. Enjoy food, refreshments, an awards ceremony, an online auction featuring local items, and—because this is New Orleans—sno-balls from Plum Street Snoballs!

Tips for Attendees with Pets

If you’re bringing your four-legged friend, ensure they’re comfortable around crowds. Keep them on secure leashes, bring water and waste bags, and check that their tags are up to date. While costumes can be fun, prioritize your pet’s comfort. If it seems like they’re not enjoying it, let them enjoy the day naturally.

Participation Without Pets

Remember, not every dog enjoys large gatherings, and that’s perfectly okay! You can still participate in the 5K and enjoy the day’s events without your pets.

Race-day registration starts at 7 a.m. at Metairie Cemetery, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., Metairie. Virtual participation is also available. For registration and more information, visit noladogsrace.com or call (504) 502-6206.

Support the local animal rescue community and have a great time! Whether you run, walk, second line, or cheer from the sidelines, Race to the Rescue has many ways for you to make a difference for local animals in need this weekend.
