Google takes a bold step to energize its AI data centers by securing a commitment to purchase 890 megawatts of power from Constellation.

Google LLC recently announced a significant partnership with Constellation Energy Corp. aimed at enhancing the nuclear power resources for its artificial intelligence data centers. This 20-year power purchase agreement, touted as a “clean energy partnership,” involves an investment of over $4.3 billion by Constellation to upgrade 11 nuclear units at various facilities in Illinois, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Key points of the agreement include:

  • 890 MW Addition: It will add 890 megawatts of reliable nuclear energy to the PJM Interconnection grid, which serves around 67 million people across the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest states.

  • Boost in Efficiency: The upgrades will incorporate new turbines, modern steam generators, and advanced control systems to enhance plant efficiency.

  • Cloud Services: Google Cloud will provide Constellation with cloud computing resources and the Gemini Enterprise platform, aiding in areas such as site selection and outage management.

  • Economic Impact: The deal is expected to sustain 4,400 high-skilled operational jobs and create about 7,200 new construction jobs during the upgrade phase.

Amanda Peterson Corio, Google’s Global Head of Data Center Energy, highlighted the potential to maximize existing nuclear infrastructure, emphasizing that maximizing current capacity is often the fastest way to meet rising electricity demand.

The tech industry has increasingly turned to nuclear power as a viable energy solution amidst rising demands for energy to support large AI data centers. Other tech giants like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft have also entered into similar agreements for nuclear energy in recent years, reflecting a broader trend in the industry towards sustainable energy sources.
