Norwegian classification society DNV has granted type approval to Corvus Energy for its Blue Whale NxtGen Energy battery system, applicable for both air-cooled and liquid-cooled setups. This approval confirms that the marine energy storage system aligns with DNV’s stringent requirements for safety, quality, and performance.
The Blue Whale NxtGen Energy system utilizes lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry and features a modular architecture, making it suitable for large-capacity installations. Corvus Energy is focusing on diverse applications, including ferries, RoPax vessels, cruise ships, and offshore vessels that require extended electric operation. Additionally, the system can be adapted for smaller hybrid installations.
The rising size of vessel battery systems is a notable trend, driven by owners seeking longer electric ranges and more fully electric operations. This trend is significantly influenced by escalating fuel costs and enhanced emissions regulations, making electrification increasingly financially viable.
Thor Humerfelt, head of product innovation at Corvus Energy, stated, “We see a clear trend towards larger battery installations, as the economics of electrification improve and vessels need longer electric range and more operational flexibility.”
The modular design is crafted to optimize battery-room space utilization and simplify the installation of multi-megawatt-hour energy storage systems. Corvus Energy has reported over 100 MWh in confirmed orders for the Blue Whale NxtGen Energy system, further supported by its extensive history of supplying battery systems for more than 1,350 maritime projects globally.
