CCA student develops AI initiative to protect Maasai heritage and presents at international conference in Saudi Arabia – San Diego Union-Tribune

Ethan Leem, a senior at Canyon Crest Academy, recently presented at the UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. At just 17, he created Maasai GPT, an AI language model designed to preserve Maasai cultural heritage and their native language, drawing from his deep appreciation for the Maasai community gained through multiple trips to Kenya.

Ethan discussed the potential for AI to uplift indigenous voices, advocating that “solutions for communities should be in the hands of the communities they are for.” Maasai GPT has achieved a 98% accuracy rate in translating the Maasai language and serves as a vital resource, not only translating but also helping Maasai warriors navigate climate impacts on their traditional cattle herding practices.

The AI incorporates a collection of 11,000 documents and audio recordings from the Maasai people, facilitating education about their culture. Ethan’s involvement with the Maasai community began through a project run by his history teacher, Timothy Stiven, and extended through various community-focused trips organized by local organizations. These experiences profoundly influenced his worldview and motivated him to develop technology beneficial to the Maasai.

Despite starting with little knowledge of computer science, Ethan harnessed recent AI advancements and collaborative efforts with the Maasai to create Maasai GPT. His project emphasizes community ownership, a principle central to ethical AI development.

Ethan’s presentation in Riyadh was not his first global speaking engagement; he previously spoke at a United Nations conference. He finds opportunities like these empowering and acknowledges their role in shaping his understanding of ethical AI.

Planning to return to Kenya in 2027, Ethan aspires to study anthropology, reflecting on community connections and the broader question of how to make meaningful contributions. His innovative work exemplifies the potential of youth-led initiatives in addressing complex global challenges.
