7 Top U.S. Hotels and Cabins for Viewing the Stars

How We Reported This Story

As an astrotourism writer and dark-sky photographer, I’ve stayed at some incredible nightscapes worldwide. For this article, I focused on seven unique U.S. accommodations—each designed for sky-watching, whether it’s fiberglass igloos, geodesic domes, or DarkSky-certified glamping tents—to share insights on their stargazing conditions.

1. Borealis Basecamp: Fairbanks, Alaska

Located just 45 minutes from Fairbanks, Borealis Basecamp lies in the auroral zone, perfect for northern lights. With accommodations designed specifically for sky-watchers, it features igloos and glass-walled cubes, offering unobstructed views of the night sky.

2. Skyview Hotel: Torrey, Utah

Nearby Capitol Reef National Park, Skyview Hotel offers geodesic domes with skylights and the main lodge’s premium rooms, complete with hot tubs for optimal stargazing experiences and access to the park’s pristine night skies.

3. The Summit at Big Bend: Terlingua, Texas

Nestled in the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve, this property features stargazing domes with viewing patios. Guests can explore nearby trails and enjoy fantastic night views over the desert landscape.

4. Fresh Coast Cabins: Copper Harbor, Michigan

Set in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, these cabins offer easy access to the northern lights with unobstructed views over Lake Superior, boasting some of the darkest skies in the contiguous U.S.

5. Coopers Rock State Forest Stargazing Cabins: Bruceton Mills, West Virginia

Opened in late 2025, these A-frame cabins are designed for stargazers with oversized windows and an array of trails nearby for daytime exploration. Several cabins also accommodate pets and individuals with disabilities.

6. Volcano House: Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii

Located on the edge of Kīlauea caldera, this lodge grants easy access to both stars and volcanic activity. With stunning views and dark skies, it’s an ideal spot for both stargazing and observing volcanic eruptions.

7. ULUM: Moab, Utah

Developed by Under Canvas in partnership with DarkSky International, ULUM offers glamping tents near arches and dark skies. Each tent features a patio allowing for sky-watching and wellness experiences like guided starlit sound baths.

These accommodations not only provide comfort but also enhance the stargazing experience, making them ideal for both novice and seasoned sky-watchers.
