Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries has filed a lawsuit against India’s food regulator after being barred from marketing its Campa-brand products as “energy drinks.” This moves highlights a growing trend among beverage makers challenging a crackdown on product labeling.
The lawsuit, submitted on October 1, seeks to overturn a June 30 directive from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), which ordered manufacturers of high-caffeine beverages labeled as “energy drinks” to discontinue this description. In response to this crackdown, other companies like PepsiCo and Monster Beverage have also initiated legal actions against the regulator, while Red Bull has managed to secure a temporary reprieve to continue using the label.
This regulatory push is part of a broader initiative in India aimed at improving food safety, which includes heightened inspections, product seizures, and new warning label requirements. Reliance claims that the actions taken by state authorities have severely disrupted its operations and harmed its market presence and goodwill.
The FSSAI has not responded to requests for comment regarding the situation. Reliance reintroduced the Campa brand in 2023, leveraging its retail distribution and competitive pricing to challenge established competitors like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. The labeling ban poses significant challenges to Reliance’s aspirations in India’s rapidly expanding energy drinks market, which is growing at an annual rate of 12.6%, surpassing growth in markets like the U.S. and China.
