October is National Energy Awareness Month, a time for consumers to reflect on how energy is produced, utilized, and conserved throughout the United States.

The U.S. Department of Energy emphasizes this month as an opportunity for Americans to assess their energy consumption, especially with the approaching colder months that can increase household energy demands.

According to the Retail Energy Supply Association (RESA), renewable energy is currently the fastest-growing energy source in the U.S. However, petroleum and natural gas still remain the most consumed energy sources, as reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

RESA is encouraging consumers in states with competitive energy markets to explore their options and compare available plans. Presently, 13 states and Washington, D.C., permit consumers to select their electricity or natural gas supplier.

Understanding energy choices can enable consumers to find plans that align with their household or business needs, including renewable energy options.

As we observe National Energy Awareness Month, RESA urges consumers to educate themselves about energy use and the choices available to them.
