Prince George’s Co. Council Approves $215M for Sphere Project
The Prince George’s County Council has taken a significant step towards the realization of the Sphere concert and entertainment venue in National Harbor, approving up to $215 million in special obligation bonds in a unanimous 11-0 vote. This funding aims to support the construction of the venue, with repayments expected to come from the revenue it generates.
County Executive Aisha Braveboy heralded the vote as a win for the county, projecting that the Sphere will produce over three times the tax revenue currently generated by Six Flags and the Commanders stadium. The closure of Six Flags in Bowie and the Commanders’ impending move to D.C. in 2030 underscore the need for this new entertainment venue. Braveboy emphasized that the Sphere will create an overall economic impact of $1.3 billion for Prince George’s County.
While the council also ratified a labor peace agreement allowing for union organization at the venue, it rejected proposals to guarantee 40% of construction jobs for union workers. Council member Wala Blegay expressed concerns about the contentious nature of these labor agreements but emphasized the importance of moving forward with the Sphere project.
The $1.4 billion facility, which will seat 6,000, is anticipated to generate thousands of job opportunities. A final vote on the overall project approval is expected to take place soon.
