DHS Acquires Two Additional Detention Facilities in California for $950 Million | Entertainment

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has acquired two immigrant detention facilities in Adelanto, California, from the GEO Group for $950 million. This transaction aligns with the Trump administration’s aim to enhance its capacity for detaining immigrants and circumvents state oversight by putting the facilities under federal ownership, despite them still being managed by private companies.

The recent sale includes the 1,940-bed Adelanto ICE Processing Center and the 704-bed Desert View Annex. DHS officials state that California’s regulations necessitate federal ownership for retaining necessary detention capacity on the West Coast. In response to the Trump administration’s immigration policies, California Governor Gavin Newsom has enacted over 20 legislative measures designed to protect detainee rights and enhance transparency within these facilities.

The federal government has invested nearly $3.2 billion in detention facility purchases, primarily in California. The GEO Group confirmed it would continue its operational management under a contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that extends until 2034. They have indicated plans to sell additional facilities, contingent on maintaining management contracts.

Despite ongoing complaints and lawsuits regarding conditions at the Adelanto facilities, including allegations of inadequate medical care and poor living conditions, DHS claims detainees receive comprehensive medical care. The acquisition signifies a continued commitment to bolster detention capabilities amid a contentious political landscape surrounding immigration enforcement.
