The Decatur County Humane Society hosted its annual Blessing of the Animals on Saturday, partnering with St. John’s Episcopal Church and Christ United Methodist Church.
Rev. Leslie Dellenbarger of St. John’s and Rev. Melissa Traver of Christ United provided blessings for dogs and cats residing at the shelter, as well as pets brought in by community members. This event honors St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment, celebrated for his love and compassion towards all creatures.
Dellenbarger emphasized the church’s commitment to this local tradition and noted the expanded cooperation with the Humane Society and Christ United this year. They are considering relocating the event to a more accessible public venue to encourage greater community participation in the future.
“Moving it to a public place in town might invite more of the community to come with their pets,” Dellenbarger told The Post-Searchlight.
For both Dellenbarger and Traver, the Blessing of the Animals transcends simple prayers. It serves as a poignant reminder of the significant role animals play in our lives and the compassionate responsibility we have as their caretakers.
Traver remarked, “It’s a reminder of all the preciousness of life, and how much joy and love animals give us. And also a reminder of our responsibility as their caretakers for their protection.”
