DOE’s Energy Independence Funding Provides Vistra with $4.2 Billion to Boost U.S. Nuclear Production

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is providing a conditional loan of $4.2 billion to Vistra Corp. to enhance its nuclear power generation capabilities. This funding aims to support nuclear modernization efforts and increase emissions-free energy production at Vistra’s nuclear plants, notably at the Perry Nuclear Power Plant in Ohio, as announced by Energy Secretary Chris Wright.

The investment aligns with a previous executive order from the Trump administration aimed at boosting nuclear energy and securing supply chains. It is expected to maintain nearly 4 GW of reliable power while adding 433 MW of new capacity, all without necessitating new transmission infrastructures.

Vistra operates six reactors across four U.S. plants, generating over 6.5 GW of electricity. The loan may also include financing for future upgrades at its Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant in Texas. Vistra is pursuing acquisitions and partnerships to meet rising energy demands, including a recent $4 billion acquisition of Cogentrix Energy and several power purchase agreements with Meta for over 2.6 GW of nuclear energy.

As data centers drive energy consumption, operators are looking for efficient ways to deliver continuous power, avoiding the costs of constructing new facilities. The current objective aims to achieve 300 GW of nuclear power by 2050. Despite not having new reactors under construction, there are efforts to reactivate retired facilities for future power generation, with significant financial backing from the DOE focused on nuclear developments.
