Celebrate Beloved Pets at the L.A. Zoo

Honor the memory of your furry friends at the Los Angeles Zoo’s Beloved Pets Ofrenda, a heartfelt tribute for animal companions who have passed away.
For the sixth consecutive year, the L.A. Zoo invites the community to participate in this colorful tribute in celebration of Día de los Muertos. Created in partnership with the Plaza de la Raza Cultural Center for the Arts & Education, this special altar helps visitors remember the pets that filled their lives with love and joy.
Who’s Behind the Event
The L.A. Zoo collaborates with Plaza de la Raza Cultural Center for the Arts & Education, a community arts organization serving Lincoln Heights and East Los Angeles. This partnership fosters a meaningful tribute that celebrates Hispanic heritage and the special bond between people and their pets.
What is an Ofrenda?
An ofrenda—meaning “offering” in Spanish—is a traditional altar made to honor deceased loved ones. These vibrant displays often include photographs, flowers, and other items that commemorate those being celebrated. The Beloved Pets Ofrenda extends this tradition to the animals that hold a special place in many families.
How to Participate
All L.A. Zoo guests can contribute to the Beloved Pets Ofrenda. From Saturdays and Sundays between October 3 and November 2, the Zoo’s Learning & Engagement team will assist visitors in adding their tributes to the altar from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Guests can print pet photos directly from their phones or use provided art supplies to create portraits. The Zoo supplies frames for visitors to decorate before placing their pet pictures on the ofrenda. The altar will remain accessible during regular Zoo hours, allowing guests to participate throughout the entire event.
The Beloved Pets Ofrenda offers a touching way to honor cherished animal companions while engaging in a significant cultural tradition.
