The U.S. Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright, announced up to $4.2 billion in federal loans aimed at upgrading nuclear power plants in Ohio and Pennsylvania, potentially lowering electric bills and preventing power outages. The announcement took place at the Perry Nuclear Power Plant near Cleveland.
Wright emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the U.S. nuclear energy sector, ensuring more affordable and reliable power for households and businesses. The funds will be allocated to Vistra, the energy company overseeing the Perry and Davis-Besse plants, to boost electricity production and extend operational lifespans by 20 years.
This initiative is expected to generate enough continuous power for over 3 million homes and create approximately 3,000 temporary and permanent jobs. The federal loan, however, is contingent upon Vistra passing legal, technical, and environmental reviews.
