USDA to Disperse Oral Rabies Vaccines from the Air in Northwest Georgia for the Safety of Pets and Wildlife

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is set to distribute over 500,000 oral rabies vaccine baits in northwest Georgia this October. This effort aims to immunize wild populations, particularly raccoons, to protect humans and domestic animals.

Key Details:

  • Operation Timeline:

    • Helicopter deployment starts around October 7.
    • Fixed-wing aircraft will begin approximately October 20.
  • Target Area:

    • Spanning over 7,000 square kilometers, including areas like LaFayette and Chickamauga.
  • Aerial Strategy:

    • Helicopters will take 2 to 3 days for the initial phase.
    • Fixed-wing planes will spend about one week distributing the baits.
    • Aircraft will be manually controlled to avoid targeting roads, buildings, or water bodies.

Safety Advice for Residents:

  • If you find intact baits, leave them alone or, with gloves, toss them into the brush for wildlife access.
  • Pet owners should refrain from retrieving baits from pets to avoid potential exposure to the liquid.

This vaccination initiative is a proactive step toward preventing rabies outbreaks in the area.
