Reclaiming the Evening: National Night Out Unites Police and Community | Entertainment

Despite being postponed from August 4 to September 29 due to bad weather, National Night Out in Union Point Park, New Bern, attracted hundreds of attendees eager to connect with local law enforcement and EMS personnel.

Originally slated for August, the event was rescheduled just a day prior due to forecasted thunderstorms. Unfortunately, heavy winds caused flooding in Union Point Park just days before the new date, leading to temporary closures of the area.

Fortunately, the weather improved in time for the event, though some lingering issues remained, such as odors from drainage problems and muddy terrain. The free event included food trucks, dessert options, informational booths, musical entertainment, and even line dancing led by DJ Keyz.

Attendees had the opportunity to meet local police officers, K-9 handlers, and first responders, and children enjoyed bounce houses while EMS staff provided tours of an ambulance. Although a precise count of participants was unavailable, Lt. Robert J. Holton of the New Bern Police Department expressed satisfaction with the turnout.

The purpose of National Night Out is to enhance police-community partnerships and foster relationships between law enforcement and neighborhood residents, creating a sense of community.
